One person has died following the collapse of part of an old building being demolished at Otolo-Nnewi in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The Anambra State Police Command, in a statement issued on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, by its Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the incident occurred during the demolition of the building, with part of the structure collapsing and trapping one of the workers.
Ikenga said operatives attached to the Otolo Divisional Headquarters responded promptly after receiving the report, cordoned off the scene and commenced preliminary investigations into the incident.
According to the PPRO, the scene was also documented by the police, while the deceased, identified as Bakeru Iwal, a 25-year-old man, was evacuated to a mortuary for preservation pending autopsy and other necessary examinations.
The Command said preliminary information indicated that the victim was among workers involved in the demolition when a section of the structure suddenly gave way and trapped him.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, according to Ikenga, has directed that the investigation be conducted professionally and thoroughly to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine whether any person bears responsibility.
“Appropriate action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation,” the Command said.
Ikenga urged members of the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to run its course, assuring that further updates would be provided as necessary.
