A yet-to-be-identified Vehicle Inspection Officer (VIO) has reportedly been crushed to death by a truck along Hospital Road, opposite Mega Primary School, in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
The fatal incident occurred on Friday, October 9, 2026, sparking panic among residents and other road users who gathered at the scene.
A video shared by Akure-based radio station Crest FM showed residents shouting in distress, while some of the officer’s colleagues appeared visibly shaken by the incident.
According to eyewitness accounts, the officer attempted to intercept the truck after it had moved into the fast lane but was unable to stop it before the fatal collision.
The officer was reportedly trapped beneath the trailer after being struck, leaving bystanders and fellow officers distressed as people gathered around the scene.
However, the circumstances surrounding the incident, including what prompted the officer to intercept the truck and the events immediately preceding the collision, remained unclear as of the time of filing this report.
