The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has met with British government officials and Nigerian diaspora stakeholders in London as part of efforts to discuss Nigeria’s development challenges and the need to rebuild the country.

Obi disclosed this in a post on his X account on Thursday, October 22, 2026, following a series of engagements in the United Kingdom, where he said discussions centred on addressing bad leadership, corruption and lack of accountability in Nigeria.

The NDC presidential candidate said he arrived in London at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, October 21, from Basel, Switzerland, and participated in several meetings with stakeholders before concluding the day at a gathering organised by the COPDEM Chief and the NDC Director of Diaspora Affairs.

According to Obi, the meetings with British government officials and members of the Nigerian diaspora focused on the collective responsibility of Nigerians at home and abroad to rebuild the country and tackle the challenges undermining national development.

He said: “All the meetings with British government officials and the Nigerian diaspora centred on our collective responsibility to rebuild Nigeria and free our country from the shackles of bad leadership, corruption, and the lack of accountability that continue to undermine our national development.”

Obi argued that these challenges had deprived millions of Nigerians of access to essential services and opportunities, including quality healthcare, education and decent employment.

The former Anambra State governor maintained that Nigerians deserved a country where every life mattered, hard work was rewarded and citizens had equal opportunities to succeed irrespective of their backgrounds or connections.

“Nigerians deserve a country where every life matters, where hard work is rewarded, and where every citizen has a fair opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background or connections,” he said.

Emphasising the need for an inclusive society, the NDC presidential candidate called for a Nigeria where opportunities were determined by merit rather than privilege or influential relationships.

“We must build a Nigeria where the child of nobody can become somebody without knowing anybody. A country that works for everyone, not just a privileged few,” Obi added.
