The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a man, Chima Ofoeke, over the suspected murder of 23-year-old Mmesoma Umeorini in Uga, Aguata Local Government Area of the state.
The arrest was announced in a statement issued on Saturday, October 24, 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who said the investigation began after the victim’s mother reported her missing.
According to the statement, the mother reported to the Divisional Police Officer of Umuchu Division that her daughter had been missing since October 16, 2026, despite efforts to trace her whereabouts.
Ikenga said police operatives, acting on intelligence and working with members of the Agunechemba security outfit in Uga, subsequently arrested Ofoeke, who was identified as the deceased’s alleged former boyfriend.
During preliminary interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to killing Umeorini following the breakdown of their relationship, the police spokesperson said.
The statement added that the suspect subsequently led detectives to the location where the woman’s remains were discovered and recovered.
In response to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, psc, mnips, directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for a comprehensive investigation.
According to Ikenga, the directive is aimed at ensuring a diligent investigation and bringing the matter to justice.
