Several police officers are feared dead, while others have reportedly been abducted after suspected bandits ambushed a vehicle conveying personnel along the Sokoto–Gusau road in Zamfara State.
The officers were travelling in a Zamfara State mass transit bus, popularly known as Bazamfara, en route to Gusau, the state capital, when the attackers struck on Monday.
A source at the scene disclosed that some of the policemen aboard the bus lost their lives during the attack, although the exact number of casualties could not be immediately established.
Sources within the police force said the officers were heading to Kaura Namoda Local Government Area to provide security for the ongoing APC primary election for the Zamfara North Senatorial District.
The sources further disclosed that, apart from those feared killed, some of the officers were reportedly taken away by the attackers.
The identities of the victims and the number of officers abducted remained unknown as of the time of filing this report, while details surrounding the circumstances of the ambush were still unclear.
When contacted, the Zamfara State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer said the command was not authorised to comment on the incident, explaining that it fell under the jurisdiction of the zonal command.
The Zone 10 Police Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Ambursa, confirmed the incident but said he was in the hospital and could not provide further details at the time.
He, however, promised to issue an official statement on the attack later.
