The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has challenged President Bola Tinubu to account for the trillions of naira saved from fuel subsidy removal, over $100 billion borrowed and increased government revenues, insisting that Nigerians deserve measurable results from public spending.
Obi, in a statement posted on his X account on Saturday, November 7, 2026, urged Tinubu to use his visit to Akwa Ibom State as an opportunity to engage Nigerians across the country and explain what his administration has achieved with the resources entrusted to it.
Beginning his message with “Good day, Mr President,” the former Anambra State governor congratulated Tinubu on spending a night outside Lagos and Abuja, while expressing hope that the visit would encourage him to travel to the remaining 33 states.
“I congratulate you on spending a night in one of Nigeria’s states outside Lagos and Abuja. I hope you enjoyed the warmth, hospitality, and delicious cuisine of Akwa Ibom, which I am sure is even better than those of the destinations where you have spent over 260 days outside Nigeria since coming into office,” Obi said.
He urged the President to explain how his administration had utilised the ₦15.8 trillion saved from the removal of fuel subsidy, the over $100 billion borrowed and additional revenues generated through taxation.
Obi also questioned the government’s claim that its revenues had surpassed targets, demanding explanations on how the resources had translated into improvements in the lives of Nigerians.
“I sincerely hope this visit will inspire you to travel to the remaining 33 states of the federation, spend time with the people and, more importantly, explain what your administration has done with the ₦15.8 trillion saved from the removal of fuel subsidy, the over $100 billion you have borrowed, the increased revenues accruing to the government from taxing Nigerians, and the additional government revenues which your administration celebrated last year as having surpassed its target,” he stated.
The NDC presidential candidate said Nigerians deserved concrete figures on poverty reduction, education, healthcare, electricity and security under the Tinubu administration.
According to him, the President should disclose how many Nigerians had been lifted out of poverty, how many out-of-school children had returned to classrooms and how many functional primary healthcare centres had been constructed.
He also demanded an explanation of improvements in electricity supply, recalling Tinubu’s promise that Nigerians should not vote for him if he failed to fix the power sector.
“They also deserve to know how much electricity supply has improved, especially given your promise that if you do not fix power, Nigerians should not vote for you. They deserve an explanation of how you have secured the country, which still ranks among the most terrorised countries in the world,” Obi said.
He stressed that the administration must account for the resources it had received, arguing that Nigerians had a right to know what had been achieved with public funds.
“Mr President, Nigerians deserve answers. They deserve to know what has been done with the resources entrusted to your government,” he stated.
Obi said the Nigeria he hoped to build would prioritise accountability, transparency and tangible improvements in citizens’ lives, rather than merely celebrating revenue figures and government spending.
“The New Nigeria we want to build will be based on accountability, transparency, and the physical, measurable impact of our public resources on the lives of citizens,” he said.
