Late Itunu Olajumoke Babalola

As the outrage over the death of Nigerian, Itunu Babalola who was framed up in Cote D’ivoire continues, the Nigerian in Diaspora Commission, NIDCOM has ordered a full investigation to the circumstances leading to her death.

Itunu was framed up by the police in Ivory Coast after she refused the paltry sum given to her as settlement after her house was burgled by 14-year-old nephew of a top police officer.

Famous Nigeria freelance journalist, David Hundeyin brought the story to limelight after she was convicted in 2019. The Chairman of NIDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa in March, assured that the matter will be investigated.

8 months after nothing was heard from NIDCOM and the poor lady died as a result of infection in prison, the Federal Government is demanding for a autopsy on the sudden death of the lady.

In a press release signed by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Head of Media, Public Relations, NIDCOM “described the death of Itunu as a tragic blow, at a time the Nigerian mission in Côte Divoire had paid and engaged the services of a lawyer to handle Itunnu’s appeal case.”

The commission stated that Itunnu’s case was drawn to their attention about five months ago and they have been doing everything possible to secure her release.

“Unfortunately, Itunnu died abruptly while all hands were on deck to seek both legal and diplomatic intervention for her by Nigeria.

“Her death, will however, not stop the appeal in court in order to vindicate her of the charges against her.”

  1. It’s distasteful how this country works. They can’t defend you at home, na abroad them go defend you?…after how many months and nothing was done? What will autopsy do for her now? Someone who reported burglary ended up in jail and died mysteriously. This news kinda breaks my heart more…
