A former Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Ghali Umar Na’Abba, has blamed politicians for the worsening state of insecurity in the country.
He said if those in the political class had shown leadership, the country would not have been plunged into its current state of insecurity.
The former speaker spoke while featuring on Politics Today on Channels Television on Thursday.
He said, “The issue of security is subsidiary because insecurity is brought about by social misgovernance of the society.
“It is the activities we do in a negative fashion that, in the long run, gather together and become security issues.
“The political class is largely responsible because they are the governors, they are the President. They are the political party operators.
“So, if they have shown leadership, definitely we wouldn’t have these security issues in the country. Therefore, I will not shy away from blaming the political class, because I’m a politician.”
Na’bba also accused people who had been in power in the last 20 years of being self-centred, adding that their actions have brought the society to a level that it has become totally disorganised.
He also lamented the hijacking of political powers by the executive and the leaders of political parties.
Na’Abba said, “Members of the legislature at the federal and state levels cannot bring the governors and the President to account.
“You cannot create the legislature and accept that things would go well in the country.
“Therefore, for us to be able to reclaim our country, we must set our politics rights. We must do whatever we can to reorganise our democracy to make it operate according to the books.”
