A bill proposing the establishment of a special armed squad for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.
Sponsored by Rep. Abiodun Derin Adesida and Rep. Olaide Lateef Muhammed, the bill aims to amend the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Act of 2007 to formally create this armed squad.
Additionally, it seeks to grant Deputy Corps Marshals the full range of benefits associated with their rank, including retirement benefits.
The legislation would also empower the FRSC with exclusive authority over road traffic administration and safety management, focusing on preventing and minimizing road traffic accidents on public roads, supervising public road users, and regulating traffic.
Furthermore, the bill would enable the FRSC to clear obstructions on public roads and enhance public education regarding proper road usage.
Following a voice vote, the bill received unanimous support from members for its passage to the second reading.
In a related motion, Rep. Garba Ibrahim Muhammad urged the FRSC to incorporate more technology into its operations. The motion called for the adoption of technology-assisted enforcement methods, including Automatic Vehicle Local and Automated Traffic Enforcement systems, as well as advanced analytics and data platforms.
It also recommended that the FRSC assess the effectiveness of these technological enforcement strategies to determine their impact on reducing traffic violations and enhancing safety.
The House adopted the motion and referred it to the House Committee on FRSC.
