A newly formed jihadist group known as Lakurawa has been terrorizing communities in Northwestern Nigeria. They recently attacked the village of Mera in Kebbi State, leaving 15 people dead and a significant number of cattle stolen.
The victims were buried with the Deputy Governor Umar Abubakar Tafida and the Emir of Argungu, Sama’ila Muhammad Mera, in attendance.
Similar to Boko Haram, Lakurawa has been imposing taxes and levies on local residents while denouncing Western civilization and democratic governance.
The Nigerian Defence Headquarters has recently confirmed the group’s presence in Sokoto and Kebbi states, where they are believed to have established bases in affected communities.
Kebbi Police spokesperson SP Nafiu Abubakar confirmed the attack, stating, “Yes, there was a terrorist attack on Mera yesterday (Friday), resulting in 15 deaths.
“As of now, we have yet to ascertain the identity of the attackers. It’s too early to confirm whether they were linked to the Lakurawa group.”
