The former Governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Lawrence Ugwuanyi, has been awarded for his outstanding contributions as a disability champion, recognising his significant efforts towards improving the welfare of the disabled community.

This honour was presented recently by the Enugu State chapter of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), which also commended Ugwuanyi for his pivotal role in ensuring the passage of the disability bill into law, a development that has notably enhanced the lives of individuals living with disabilities in the state.

In presenting the award, the Enugu State Chairman of JONAPWD, Mr. Onyebuchi Mbah, expressed gratitude to the former Governor and lawmaker for his extensive welfare initiatives, particularly the enactment of the disability bill. He emphasised that this landmark achievement has transformed the lives of persons with disabilities in Enugu State, promoting their inclusion in governance and facilitating access to essential social services.

Mr. Mbah further remarked that the former Governor’s administration prioritised the rights of persons with disabilities, not only by providing legal support but also by fostering an environment where their voices could be heard.

He voiced hope that this act of kindness and inclusivity would inspire other leaders to implement similar measures in their regions.

Receiving the award on behalf of the former Governor, Ambassador Amaka Nweke expressed Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Lawrence Ugwuanyi’s heartfelt appreciation for the recognition.

She acknowledged JONAPWD for their honour and reaffirmed Ugwuanyi’s dedication to supporting the welfare and inclusion of persons with disabilities. She underscored the resilience of the disability community and stressed the importance of recognising their valuable contributions to society.

Ugwuanyi described the award as a motivation for him to remain an advocate for the rights of marginalised groups, both as a former Governor and a public servant. He urged stakeholders and policymakers to recognise persons with disabilities as crucial contributors to societal advancement and to implement policies that promote their growth and inclusion.
