Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has called for a revival of the North’s political partnership with the South-South region, asserting that such a strategic alliance is crucial to “save Nigeria.”

El-Rufai made these comments on Friday during a visit to the family of the late elder statesman and Niger Delta advocate, Edwin Clark, who passed away on February 17.

He emphasised the historical connection between the North and the South-South, urging a return to that collaboration.

“In the 60s, 70s, and 80s, the North’s traditional political allies were from the South-South. Let us not forget that. We must revisit that partnership. We need to save this country, as it truly calls for rescue. A rescue operation is essential,” El-Rufai stated.

His remarks coincided with increasing discussions about coalition-building in preparation for the 2027 general elections, as opposition politicians reportedly engage in strategic meetings.

During the visit, El-Rufai was joined by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, whom he commended for his leadership in driving economic reforms during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration from 1999 to 2007.

In recent weeks, El-Rufai has been meeting with opposition figures, sparking speculation about his political intentions.
