Senator Austin Akobundu, representing Abia Central, has emphasised that the late Professor Humphrey Nwosu, former Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), deserves to be immortalised for his pivotal role in the conduct of the June 12, 1993 election, which was won by Chief MKO Abiola but ultimately annulled by the military regime led by General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd).

It is worth noting that the Senate recently engaged in a heated debate on this matter just before their break. During this discussion, Senator Akobundu strongly opposed the views of colleagues who challenged the motion to honour the late NEC Chairman, asserting that Nwosu exhibited remarkable bravery in the face of intense pressure and threats from the military government.

In a recent appearance on the AIT political programme ‘Inside the Parliament’ on Tuesday, 1st April 2025, Akobundu reiterated his belief that Professor Humphrey Nwosu deserves to be celebrated for his innovative Option A4 voting system and for facilitating what is regarded as the freest, fairest, and most credible election in Nigeria’s history.

“You can’t talk about June 12, NADECO, the activism that expedited the military’s departure, or the validation of Abiola’s election results without acknowledging the crucial role played by Humphrey Nwosu and his team. This is my position!” declared Akobundu.
