Three officers from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) are currently hospitalised following an attack by gunmen during a raid in the Jahi area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Thursday night.
Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA’s spokesman, provided details in a statement issued on Friday.
“The incident occurred when a team of NDLEA operatives, acting on intelligence and surveillance reports, raided an uncompleted building at the NNPC area of Jahi, where 74 bottles of codeine, 10 litres of codeine syrup, 48 grams of tramadol 225mg, 4.9kgs of skunk—a strain of cannabis—and five Android phones were recovered.
“As the NDLEA team made their way out of the location, they came under gun attack,” Babafemi stated.
He went on to explain that three of the personnel involved in the operation sustained gunshot injuries: one to the rib and two others to their back and leg.
The injured officers were initially stabilised at the Police Clinic in Garki Area 1 before being transferred to the National Hospital Abuja for further medical attention.
Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, praised the staff of the Police Clinic for their prompt support.
He also expressed gratitude to the Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital, whom he personally contacted, for overseeing the treatment of the wounded officers.
While in Kano for official engagements, the NDLEA boss communicated with the injured officers by phone to wish them a speedy recovery.
He assured them that the agency would employ all available resources and collaborate with other security agencies to apprehend those responsible for the attack.
