The Enugu State Government has assured the public that there is no structural fault with the Abakpa Nike Flyover at the Nike Lake Road T-junction, following the circulation of a viral video suggesting visible cracks on the structure.
According to a press statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, Ngozi Ngene, a team of engineers conducted a thorough investigation and confirmed that the cracks observed are not on the flyover itself but are located at the back of the abutment, where the road ramp was filled to meet the elevation of the bridge.
The ministry explained that the cracks are a natural result of soil settlement — a common process in which compacted soil gradually releases moisture over time, leading to minor voids and subsequent adjustment of the soil mass.
The area in question, the statement noted, involves over nine metres of fill material, making such settlement anticipated and not structurally significant.
“The general public is hereby informed not to be alarmed by these cracks as they were anticipated,” the statement read.
“Further investigation was carried out on the structural elements of the flyover, and they were found to be intact.”
