The Young Progressives Party (YPP) governorship candidate in Anambra State, Sir Paul Chukwuma, has condemned in strong terms the murder of Barr. Rolex Ifeanyi Iloakasia, the President-General of Aguleri community in Anambra East Local Government Area, describing it as a brutal attack on the state’s future and collective peace.
Barr. Iloakasia, a respected lawyer and community leader, was reportedly gunned down on May 15, 2025, while returning from court. The news of his killing has sparked outrage and concern across the state.
“I received with immense shock the news of the murder of Barr. Rolex Iloakasia,” Chukwuma said in a statement issued on Thursday. “This extremely painful loss signposts a dangerous descent into a state of nature of sorts, which has been going on in Anambra State.”
He described the slain community leader as “a budding, young, and promising legal professional” whose brutal murder represents a direct assault on peace and order in the state.
“It is shocking that some armed thugs can trail some people on their way in Anambra and open fire on them without consequence. This barbaric act is an attack on Anambra State, an attack on our future, and must be completely condemned by all,” Chukwuma stated.
While acknowledging reports that some of the suspected assailants have been apprehended or neutralized, he insisted that the development, though commendable, only offers temporary relief. He challenged the current administration to go beyond reactive measures and focus on proactive security strategies.
“The government of Anambra State must live up to its duty of protecting lives and properties,” he said. “We don’t have to wait for criminals to act before they are trailed and apprehended. The government must retune its strategy and shift from mere apprehension of criminals after they have inflicted damage, to crime prevention and control.”
Chukwuma emphasized the urgent need for better collaboration between the state government and security agencies to dismantle criminal networks operating with impunity in the region.
He concluded by offering his condolences to the bereaved: “I extend my deepest condolences to the family of Barr. Rolex and the entire Aguleri community. May the good Lord comfort you all, and may the soul of the departed rest in the Lord’s bosom, Amen.”
