…Anambra Police Complement Rescue Efforts, CP Orutugu Issues Safety Warning
A gas cylinder explosion at a plumbing market along Uga Street near the Onitsha Head Bridge in Anambra State has left one person dead and six others severely injured.
The tragic incident occurred on May 16, 2025, prompting an immediate rescue response from police operatives of the Onitsha Head Bridge Divisional Police Headquarters, who worked alongside good-spirited individuals to evacuate the victims.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer for Anambra State, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said, “Our operatives quickly responded to the scene to support the ongoing rescue efforts. Six persons were rescued and are currently receiving treatment at a medical facility. Unfortunately, one individual was confirmed dead and the body has been deposited in the morgue.”
Preliminary investigations reveal that the explosion was caused by a welding gas cylinder that ignited while a welder was working on metal. Police believe the explosion resulted from excessive heat exposure to the cylinder.
To prevent opportunistic crimes in the aftermath of the incident, police have secured the area. “Our officers are maintaining a visible presence at the scene to ensure that no criminal elements exploit the situation,” Ikenga added.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc MNIPS PhD, expressed deep concern and used the occasion to highlight crucial safety practices for those who work with gas and welding equipment.
“This unfortunate event is a painful reminder of the risks involved when safety protocols are not strictly observed. I urge all technicians, artisans, and traders to prioritize regular inspection and maintenance of their gas cylinders,” CP Orutugu said.
He added: “Gas cylinders should be stored properly and used strictly according to manufacturers’ guidelines. We must all take responsibility to prevent avoidable disasters like this.”
The Commissioner’s safety advisory includes:
- Routine inspection and servicing of gas cylinder equipment
- Safe and secure storage of gas cylinders
- Strict adherence to manufacturer instructions and general safety procedures
The Anambra State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to public safety and urged the public to remain vigilant and report any potential hazards.
“Our thoughts are with the victims and their families. We are doing everything we can to support them while ensuring such incidents do not reoccur,” CP Orutugu concluded.
