Central Washington College of Nursing Sciences, Enugu, has formally engaged with its host community in Akpuoga, Enugu East Local Government Area, as part of preparatory activities for the relocation to its permanent campus scheduled for September.

Speaking at an interactive forum held over the weekend, the founder of Central Washington College of Nursing Sciences, Prof. Augustine Akubue emphasized the school’s commitment to sustainable development and strong community relations.

“We are establishing our permanent site here and wanted to inform the community formally. We seek collaboration in areas such as security, employment, and community protection. Our aim is to contribute meaningfully to human capital development,” the founder stated.

Prof. Akubue added that recent policies by the Enugu State Government, which mandate community engagement before any development, have inspired the institution to prioritize strong grassroots relationships.

“Community engagement is not just a requirement; it’s a core part of our value system. We are here to build with you, not just near you,” he said.

As part of its corporate social responsibility, the college announced plans for several initiatives, including:

  • Free medical outreaches, including sponsored surgeries
  • Employment opportunities for both teaching and non teaching staff
  • Scholarship opportunities with up to 40% tuition discounts for outstanding students from the host community
  • Active participation in community events and cultural activities
  • Educational and health awareness programmes to uplift local standards

Currently, the school operates a College of Nursing and Midwifery, while plans are underway to launch a separate College of Health Technology offering courses in Public Health, Environmental Health, and Community Health.

“We are registered with JAMB, and while the College of Nursing and Midwifery will remain on one site, the Health Technology College will be located separately, in line with regulatory guidelines,” the founder clarified.

Community leaders, visibly pleased by the development, pledged their full support for the institution’s relocation and expansion.

Hon. Williams Okolo, a former councillor of the ward expressed gratitude:

“I am very appreciative of the Professor and his team—the way they presented the project and the benefits we expect to derive are commendable. We, the community, will partner with you to ensure that the aim and objective of this project are fully achieved.”

Hon. Collins Ekete, former Deputy Chairman of Enugu East Local Government Area, shared his excitement:

“When I saw the cameramen, I wondered what was happening. But when I heard the Professor speak, I told one of my boys to inform the PG so that this important interaction could be recorded. I’m truly excited that something like this is happening in our community.”

Representatives from the college reiterated their openness to continuous dialogue and partnership with local stakeholders as they work towards building an institution that not only educates but also uplifts its host environment.

The engagement marks a significant step toward inclusive development and signals the institution’s dedication to long-term collaboration with the Akpuoga community.
