Announcing the closure via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria stated that the day is “set aside to honour American military personnel who died while serving their country.”

Memorial Day is a solemn occasion in the United States, typically marked by flag displays, remembrance ceremonies, and tributes to fallen servicemen and women across the country.

The embassy confirmed that the closure will affect all routine consular services at both the Abuja and Lagos offices for the day.

Normal operations are expected to resume on Tuesday, May 27. The U.S. Mission advised individuals with urgent consular needs to visit its website for emergency contact information.
