Panic swept through parts of Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, on Monday following an explosion near the Mogadishu Cantonment, popularly known as Abacha Barracks.
The blast occurred at a bus stop directly opposite the high-security military installation, sending shockwaves through the bustling area and prompting an immediate response from security agencies.
The Nigerian Army confirmed the incident in a brief message on its official X handle (@HQNigerianArmy), stating: “Explosion At Bus Stop Opposite Mogadishu Cantonment Abuja. Situation Under Control. Details Later.”
Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud bang at the usually crowded transit point, causing chaos among commuters and residents. The immediate aftermath saw heightened tension, with many fleeing the area in fear of a possible follow-up attack.
Security personnel quickly arrived at the scene, cordoned off the area, and restricted movement while conducting preliminary investigations.
Although the cause and impact of the explosion have not been officially disclosed, sources within military circles say a probe is already underway to determine the nature of the device and identify those responsible.
The Mogadishu Cantonment is one of Abuja’s most fortified military zones and lies along a major route heavily trafficked by both civilians and security personnel. Monday’s incident has renewed concerns about the vulnerability of critical infrastructure and public spaces.
As of the time of this report, there are no confirmed casualties, and no group has claimed responsibility for the explosion.
