Enugu North Local Government Area, in collaboration with the Enugu State Government, has launched a four-day digital literacy training program for verified teachers seeking employment at the newly established smart schools spread across the council’s 13 political wards.
The training aims to prepare Enugu North teachers for the upcoming computer-based tests (CBTs), which will determine their qualification to teach in the smart school system — a flagship educational reform of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s administration that emphasizes experiential learning and technology-driven instruction.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony, Dr. Ibenaku Harford Onoh, Chairman of Enugu North LGA, described the training as a critical step toward equipping local teachers with the essential digital skills required to participate in the smart school recruitment process and to contribute to the transformation of the education sector.
According to him, the program is designed with the September 2025 launch of the smart school initiative in mind and aims to familiarize teachers with the digital tools and platforms necessary for 21st-century classroom teaching.
“We are not just preparing teachers, we are preparing 21st-century educators who can inspire innovation and critical thinking in the classroom,” he stated.
“This digital literacy program will serve as the backbone of effective teaching and learning in the smart school system.
“The goal is to create confident and competent educators who can adapt to the evolving demands of education in the digital age. We are investing in people who will shape the minds of tomorrow’s leaders.”
Dr. Onoh also lauded Governor Mbah for what he described as a “transformative move that will reshape the future of education in our state.”
He equally commended Dr. Mrs. Chinyere Onyeisi, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Experiential Learning, for her pivotal role in supporting the initiative and laying the foundation for a future-ready education system.
He urged the participating teachers to take full advantage of the opportunity, emphasizing that the training would not only make them eligible for smart school recruitment but also empower them as change agents within their communities.
Dr. Onoh reaffirmed the council’s commitment to supporting the state’s education policies and pledged continued collaboration to ensure sustainable development in the education sector across Enugu North LGA.
On her part, Dr. Mrs. Onyishi described the training as timely, noting that it would expose teachers to the principles of experiential learning and equip them to effectively contribute to Governor Mbah’s vision for education.
“The training will not only prepare the teachers for success in their qualifying exams,” she said, “but will also ground them in the use of modern equipment that will be available in the smart schools, and enhance their capacity for research.”
She encouraged participants to take the training seriously, stressing that the knowledge acquired could be life-changing.
“The knowledge you’ll acquire here can liberate you financially,” she added, underscoring the broader personal and professional benefits of digital proficiency in today’s world.
