Members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu State Council, have elected a new executive committee to pilot the affairs of the union for the next three years.
The election, which was previously stalled three months ago, eventually held on Saturday following the dissolution of the caretaker committee that had been overseeing the union’s activities.
Comrade Obinna Ogbuka of Radio Nigeria emerged as the new chairman, replacing Comrade Sam Udekwe of the Enugu State Broadcasting Service (ESBS), who had earlier withdrawn from the race before the rescheduled polls.
Also elected was Comrade Chinedu Adonu of Vanguard Newspaper, who defeated Regis Anukwuoji of BusinessDay in a keenly contested vote.
Other elected officials include Suleiman Onyeama of the State Ministry of Information as Secretary, and Fred Nnaji of ESBS as Assistant Secretary.
Stephanie Udeh of Federal Information clinched the position of Treasurer, while Sandra Ukeje of Solid FM emerged as Financial Secretary. Florence Ani was elected as Auditor.
In his acceptance speech, the new NUJ Enugu Chairman, Comrade Obinna Ogbuka, who is also a former Chairman of the Radio Nigeria Chapel, declared the start of a new era in the council.
“With my emergence as the chairman of NUJ Enugu Council, a new administration has emerged,” he said, adding that the new executive is committed to inclusivity.
“We are going to serve the interest of all members. We are here to serve every member of the NUJ. We shall ensure that we move NUJ to a greater height. The welfare of members is our priority. I seek the cooperation and support of all for us to perform.”
He also thanked the electoral committee for organizing a credible and widely accepted election.
“We have come to speak with one voice,” he concluded.
