The Federal Government has cancelled the traditional military parade for the 2025 Democracy Day celebration, marking a departure from past commemorations.
According to details released by the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Democracy Day Celebration, the 26th anniversary of Nigeria’s Democracy Day, which falls on Thursday, June 12, will instead feature a series of non-parade events.
President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to deliver a nationwide broadcast at 7:00 a.m. on Thursday, foregoing the annual Democracy Day parade observed in previous years.
Rather than attending a parade, President Tinubu will make a special appearance at a joint session of the National Assembly at 12 noon.
The joint session will include speeches on the state of the nation, reflections on Nigeria’s democratic progress, and renewed calls for unity and enduring reforms to strengthen national institutions.
Later in the day, a public lecture is scheduled to hold at 4:00 p.m. at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.
The lecture will bring together government officials, political leaders, and civil society stakeholders to discuss Nigeria’s democratic trajectory under the theme: “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms.”
The statement from the Inter-Ministerial Committee encouraged members of the public to follow the broadcast and participate in the national dialogue on strengthening democratic governance and institutional reform.
