The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has extended heartfelt condolences to the family of late music icon Chief Mike Ejeagha, describing him as a monumental figure in the preservation and promotion of Igbo culture through music.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, the President-General, Senator John Azuta Mbata, conveyed the sympathies of the Igbo nation to the Ejeagha family, the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, and the people of Enugu State over the passing of the legendary folklorist, who died on Friday, June 6, 2025, at the age of 95.
Senator Mbata, who made the remarks while receiving a delegation of Igbo leaders over the weekend, said,
“Not only was Mike Ejeagha a songwriter and musician of note, he was equally a folklorist and celebrated maestro, who for more than half a century used his highlife genre to educate the public and promote Igbo culture and values.”
The Ndigbo leader emphasized that Ejeagha’s contributions to music and cultural storytelling were unparalleled, noting that his works serve as both a historical archive and an artistic beacon for future generations.
“Ejeagha’s legacy in the music industry is a remarkable source of inspiration which will continue to transcend generations,” Senator Mbata added.
While praying for the peaceful repose of the late icon’s soul, he also assured the family of the solidarity and support of Ndigbo in this time of mourning.
“Ndigbo are with them at this difficult time,” Mbata said.
