A new civic platform aimed at transforming governance and promoting grassroots empowerment in Abia State was officially launched on Saturday in Umuahia. Known as the New Abia Movement (NAM), the initiative seeks to foster participatory democracy, government accountability, and inclusive development across the 17 local government areas of the state.

Led by respected civil society activist, educationist, and community leader Comrade Zulu Ofoelue, NAM is described as a values-driven coalition of citizens committed to shaping Abia’s future through unified action and civic consciousness. With more than 10,000 registered members and organized cells in all wards of the state, the movement signals a significant surge in public engagement.

Speaking at the colourful inauguration ceremony, Comrade Ofoelue emphasized the non-partisan and people-centered mission of NAM.

“The New Abia Movement is a call to conscience, not a political party. We stand with the people, for the people, and by the people—guided only by truth, justice, and service,” he said.

The event attracted a broad spectrum of dignitaries and local government officials, reflecting widespread endorsement for the initiative. Among those present were Rev. Dr. Chris Nkata (Chairman, Abia North LGA), Mr. Ukoha Idika (Chairman, Ohafia LGA), Mr. Nwankwo Abali (Chairman, Arochukwu LGA), Pastor Chibuike Okonkwo (Chairman, Ugwunagbo LGA), Mr. Joachin Okwueze (Chairman, Aba North LGA), Chief KO Okechi (Chairman, Isikwuato LGA), Mr. Emeka Abengowe (Chairman, Aba South LGA), and Mrs. Peace Onyeka (Abia State Woman Leader). Other local government representatives and state officers also graced the occasion.

NAM outlined its core objectives during the event, which include:

  • Promoting participatory democracy by encouraging citizens’ involvement in governance.
  • Advancing government accountability through advocacy for transparency, responsiveness, and ethical leadership.
  • Enhancing civic education to empower residents on their rights, responsibilities, and the strength of community organizing.
  • Empowering youth and women by supporting leadership, entrepreneurship, and self-reliance initiatives.
  • Promoting sustainable development through partnerships with communities to improve infrastructure and social services.
  • Strengthening unity and harmony by championing inclusion, tolerance, and shared responsibility.

The launch, according to participants, ushered in a renewed sense of hope for communities across the state and reaffirmed the collective aspiration for a brighter and more inclusive future.
