The Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced a compulsory drug and substance abuse test policy for all students seeking admission into tertiary institutions and senior secondary schools, as well as for those already enrolled.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced the new policy during the signing of a partnership agreement with the Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd).

Dr. Alausa revealed that the move was in response to the alarming rise in substance abuse among students, particularly on university campuses. He emphasized that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is deeply concerned about the situation and is committed to addressing the problem through proactive policies.

In a related development, the Minister also disclosed on Wednesday that the Federal Government has approved a 50% increase in scholarship grants across all academic levels. He said this is part of a comprehensive overhaul of the national scholarship programme aimed at boosting youth development and educational access.

“These efforts are geared towards investing more significantly in our young people and ensuring a healthier, drug-free learning environment while easing the financial burden on students,” Dr. Alausa stated.

The dual initiatives reflect the administration’s broader commitment to curbing drug abuse and enhancing support for education nationwide.
