Chelsea Football Club have announced a mutual separation from head coach Enzo Maresca, bringing an end to his tenure at Stamford Bridge amid mounting internal pressures and concerns over the club’s league form.
The club confirmed the decision on Thursday, noting that despite recent silverware, both parties agreed that a change was necessary to give the team the best chance of meeting its season objectives.
During his spell in charge, Maresca guided the Blues to victories in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup, achievements Chelsea described as significant chapters in the club’s recent history.
In a statement published on the club’s website, Chelsea acknowledged Maresca’s contributions and explained the rationale behind the decision.
“During his time at the Club, Enzo led the team to success in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup. Those achievements will remain an important part of the Club’s recent history, and we thank him for his contributions to the Club,” the statement read.
The club added that the decision was driven by the need to refocus ahead of critical competitions still ahead this season.
“With key objectives still to play for across four competitions, including qualification for Champions League football, Enzo and the club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track,” Chelsea said.
Chelsea also extended its best wishes to the Italian coach, thanking him for his service and commitment during his time at the club.
The announcement follows weeks of speculation surrounding Maresca’s future, after reports emerged that he was considering stepping down amid growing internal tensions.
Earlier reports indicated that Maresca was unhappy with what he perceived as constant interference from the club’s hierarchy, particularly in areas relating to recruitment, squad planning and long-term sporting strategy.
Those disagreements were said to have intensified following a disappointing run of league results that saw Chelsea drift away from the top-four positions, despite remaining active across multiple competitions.
Sources also pointed to frustrations over team selection, player management and differing visions for the club’s future, issues that reportedly strained relationships behind the scenes.
While Maresca delivered success in cup competitions, concerns over Chelsea’s league performances continued to grow, ultimately casting doubt over his ability to continue in the role and paving the way for Thursday’s announcement.
