Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians to embrace unity, resilience and people-oriented leadership as the country steps into 2026, acknowledging the economic and security challenges that have tested the nation’s resolve.
In his 2026 New Year message, Jonathan extended warm greetings to Nigerians at home and abroad, describing the new year as a moment for gratitude, hope and sober reflection.
“As we enter 2026, we give thanks to God for the gift of life and for the privilege of a new beginning,” Jonathan said. “The turning of the year invites hope and reflection, and it is with both that we welcome this moment.”
Reflecting on the outgoing year, the former president noted that Nigeria has faced significant trials, ranging from economic pressures to persistent insecurity, which he said have brought hardship and loss to many families.
“The period behind us has not been without its trials,” he said. “As a nation and as individuals, we have confronted economic pressures and persistent insecurity; challenges that have tested our resilience and, for many families, brought hardship and loss.”
Jonathan stressed that these realities underscore the need for responsible and people-centred leadership, as well as a renewed sense of collective responsibility among citizens.
“These experiences remind us of the responsibility we bear toward one another and the importance of people-oriented leadership,” he added.
Despite the difficulties, Jonathan praised Nigerians for their courage and perseverance, noting that the country’s diversity and shared belief in a better future continue to serve as a source of strength.
“Even in these difficult circumstances, the enduring character of the Nigerian people has remained evident,” he said. “Across our communities, we have continued to see courage, solidarity, and a quiet determination to persevere.”
He described resilience as one of Nigeria’s greatest assets, saying it must remain the foundation for unity, peace and sustainable progress.
“This spirit of resilience is one of our nation’s greatest strengths,” Jonathan said. “It is the foundation upon which unity, peace, and lasting progress must continue to be built.”
Looking ahead, the former president called on both leaders and citizens to recommit themselves to national ideals, stressing that patriotism must be matched with a strong sense of duty, integrity and humility in leadership.
“As we move forward into 2026, let us renew our commitment to the ideals that bind us together as one people,” he said. “Leadership at all levels must be anchored in service, guided by humility, integrity, and a sincere commitment to the welfare of the people.”
Jonathan concluded by wishing Nigerians peace, good health and fulfillment in the new year, while expressing hope for a more united, just and prosperous nation.
“I wish you and your families a peaceful, healthy, and fulfilling year ahead,” he said, “and I pray that our nation advances steadily toward unity, justice, and shared prosperity.”
