In what appears to be a major step toward stabilizing governance in Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has forwarded a fresh list of commissioner nominees to the Rivers State House of Assembly following a recent political truce in the state.

The development was confirmed on Tuesday by the Clerk of the House, Emeka Amadi, in a statement posted on the Assembly’s official Facebook page.

Nine Nominees in First Batch

According to the statement, the governor nominated nine individuals, believed to be the first batch of commissioner-designates.

The nominees are:

  • Datonye Alasia, a professor
  • Tonye Bellgam
  • Temple Nwofor
  • Peters Nwagor
  • Charity Deemua
  • Tamuno Williams, a lawyer
  • Lekue Kenneth
  • Otonye Amachree, a lawyer
  • Amairigha Hart

The Assembly directed the nominees to submit 40 copies of their Curriculum Vitae, photocopies of their credentials, and evidence of tax compliance as part of the screening process.

“All documents should be forwarded to the office of the Clerk of the House at the Rivers State House of Assembly Quarters,” Mr Amadi stated.

The submission of the list comes amid efforts to fully implement a peace deal that followed months of political tension between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

The crisis, which began a few months after Fubara assumed office in 2023, stemmed from a struggle over control of political structures in the oil-rich South-South state. The conflict led to repeated impeachment threats and executive-legislative standoffs.

In February, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu intervened for the fourth time in a bid to broker peace between the rival camps.

Shortly after the intervention, Governor Fubara dissolved the State Executive Council. On February 19, the Rivers Assembly withdrew its third impeachment move against the governor and his deputy, Ngọzi Odu, a professor.

The latest move to reconstitute the cabinet is widely seen as part of efforts to restore administrative normalcy and reinforce the fragile political settlement in the state.
