President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has relieved Mr. Wale Edun of his duties as Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, appointing Mr. Taiwo Oyedele as his replacement in a major cabinet reshuffle.
Also affected by the shake-up is Mr. Umar Dangiwa, who was removed as Minister of Housing and Urban Development.
The changes were announced in a memo issued by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.
According to the memo, Edun has been directed to hand over to Oyedele, who will now assume office as the new Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy.
Oyedele previously served as Minister of State for Finance before his elevation.
For the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Mr. Muttaqha Rabe Darma (PhD) has been named as ministerial nominee and minister-designate, while Dangiwa was instructed to hand over to the Minister of State pending the completion of the appointment process.
The directive stated that “all handing over and taking over processes should be completed on or before close of business on Thursday, 23rd April, 2026.”
Explaining the reason behind the cabinet changes, Akume said, “These changes are aimed at strengthening cohesion, synergy in governance as well as achieving more impactful delivery on the economy to Nigerians, through the Renewed Hope Agenda.”
He added that the President approved the reshuffle in full exercise of the powers granted to him under Sections 147 and 148 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.
Akume further disclosed that President Tinubu expressed appreciation to the outgoing ministers for their service to the nation and wished them success in their future endeavours.
He also noted that the President assured all cabinet members that “the process of reinvigoration shall be continuous.”
