DSS

A kidnapping syndicate suffered a major setback in Imo State after operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), working alongside other security agencies and local vigilantes, rescued a 29-year-old man abducted in Orlu Local Government Area.

The Imo State Command of the DSS disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday, August 21, 2026, saying the operation led to the rescue of the victim, Ibeabuchi Adibenma, as well as the neutralisation of two suspected members of the kidnapping syndicate.

Adibenma was reportedly kidnapped at about 7pm on Tuesday, August 18, around Afor-Ogidi Market in Isiala Amaifeke Community while returning from the International Market, Umuna, Orlu.

According to the DSS, the armed kidnappers, who were operating on two motorcycles, intercepted and double-crossed the victim’s vehicle before whisking him away to an undisclosed location.

The suspects subsequently contacted his family and demanded a N15 million ransom for his release.

DSS Leads Rescue Operation

Following the abduction, security agencies intensified intelligence gathering and surveillance before launching a coordinated operation in the early hours of Thursday, August 20.

The operation eventually led security operatives to the kidnappers’ location at Ihioma Community, Orlu, where Adibenma was rescued.

The DSS said two suspected members of the gang were neutralised during the operation, while security personnel recovered two high-calibre weapons and ammunition.

The rescued victim was immediately taken into protective custody and later reunited with his family.

The operation represents another setback for kidnapping networks operating in Imo State, as security agencies and local vigilante groups continue joint efforts to dismantle criminal camps and prevent violent groups from establishing footholds across the state.

Security agencies have intensified operations to track down other members of the syndicate who fled the scene.

They also urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible and timely information that could assist security personnel in preventing and combating kidnapping and other violent crimes across the state.
