The Presidency on Wednesday dismissed reports suggesting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu sacked the former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and the former Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, clarifying that both men voluntarily resigned from office.
This was contained in a State House press release issued on April 22, 2026, by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, Edun tendered his resignation before the President announced his replacement, citing health reasons after recently battling ill health.
The Presidency noted that the former finance minister, who turned 70 on Monday, submitted his resignation letter on his birthday and thanked the President for the opportunity to serve in the administration.
“It has been a pleasure and privilege to serve your administration and the Renewed Hope Agenda,” Edun wrote.
“Under your leadership, Nigeria has emerged stronger, more resilient and more internationally respected.
“I wish you and the administration every success in the future.”
Before the official announcement of his exit by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Edun reportedly paid a valedictory visit to President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday, where both men held an hour-long discussion before he departed to focus on his private business interests.
The Presidency also confirmed that Dangiwa similarly resigned from office and expressed gratitude to the President for the opportunity to serve in the Federal Executive Council.
Dangiwa, an architect, previously served as Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria between 2015 and 2022, and also held office as Secretary to the Katsina State Government before his appointment as housing minister in August 2023.
Edun, an economist and investment banker, previously served as Lagos State Commissioner for Finance between 1999 and 2004 during Tinubu’s tenure as governor of Lagos State.
He also worked at Chase Merchant Bank before joining the World Bank through its elite Young Professionals Programme in 1986, where he handled economic and financial packages for several countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.
In 1989, he co-founded Investment Banking & Trust Company Limited, now known as Stanbic IBTC Holdings, and later founded Denham Management Limited, which evolved into the Chapelhill Denham Group.
President Tinubu expressed appreciation to both former ministers for what the Presidency described as their dedicated service and significant contributions to the administration’s economic reform programme.
The President also wished them success in their future endeavours.
In the same statement, Tinubu charged the new Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, to consolidate ongoing reforms and drive the administration’s fiscal and economic agenda with renewed discipline and innovation.
The Presidency further disclosed that the President would soon transmit the name of Muttaqha Rabe Darma to the Senate for confirmation as ministerial nominee for the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.
