The Deputy National Chairman (South) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Ben Nwoye, has undertaken his first international assignment for the ruling party, representing Nigeria at the National Convention of Burundi’s ruling party, the National Council for the Defense of Democracy–Forces for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD), held in Gitega, the country’s capital.

Nwoye attended the convention on Sunday as the official representative of the APC, extending goodwill, solidarity, and strengthening party-to-party relations between Nigeria and Burundi.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by Dr. Kingsman Chikelu, Special Adviser on Medical and Diaspora Affairs to the APC Deputy National Chairman (South), and made available to journalists on Sunday.

According to Chikelu, Nwoye’s participation reflects the APC’s commitment to shared democratic values and stronger inter-party cooperation across Africa.

“The Office of the Special Adviser on Medical and Diaspora Affairs to the Deputy National Chairman (South) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) wishes to inform the public that Dr. Ben Nwoye is currently in the Republic of Burundi, where he is participating in the National Convention of the country’s ruling party, the National Council for the Defense of Democracy–Forces for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD),” the statement read.

“Dr. Nwoye is attending the Convention as a representative of Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress, in a demonstration of solidarity, shared democratic values, and strengthened inter-party relations across the African continent.

“In his goodwill message delivered at the Convention, Dr. Nwoye congratulated His Excellency, President Évariste Ndayishimiye, on the renewal of his mandate by the ruling party. He described the endorsement as a testament to the confidence reposed in the President’s leadership and vision for the people of Burundi,” Chikelu stated.

Nwoye also urged President Ndayishimiye to sustain democratic governance, strengthen national unity, and consolidate developmental progress in Burundi.

He stressed that leadership at such a level comes with continental responsibilities, especially as Ndayishimiye also serves as Chairman of the African Union.

“Dr. Nwoye further encouraged President Ndayishimiye to continue to deepen democratic governance, promote unity, and consolidate developmental strides in Burundi. He noted that the responsibilities of leadership at this level extend beyond national borders, particularly in his capacity as Chairman of the African Union, where expectations remain high for progressive, inclusive, and forward-looking leadership across Africa,” the statement added.

Speaking on broader continental issues, Nwoye emphasized the need for African leaders to work together in addressing major challenges such as economic growth, healthcare delivery, climate change, and regional security.

He maintained that political parties across the continent must rise beyond electoral contests and become engines for innovation and people-focused governance.

“Dr. Nwoye emphasized the importance of African leaders working collaboratively to address shared challenges, including economic development, healthcare access, climate change, and regional security.”

He further stressed that,” political parties on the continent must continue to serve as platforms for policy innovation, people-centered governance, and sustainable development.”

Nwoye also conveyed warm greetings and best wishes from the leadership and members of the APC, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to stronger bilateral and multilateral ties with fellow African nations.

The APC said its participation at the convention highlights the party’s dedication to strengthening democratic institutions, promoting party diplomacy, and fostering unity among African countries.
