Residents across parts of Enugu have been plunged into blackout following a rainstorm that disrupted electricity infrastructure on Sunday.

In a statement issued on May 4, 2026, MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) said the outage was caused by heavy rainfall and strong winds, which led to a critical fault on key distribution lines.

According to the company’s Head of Communications, Emeka Ezeh, the weather incident resulted in a wire cut on Emene Industrial Lines 1 and 2, affecting a distribution tower and interrupting supply to multiple feeders.

“The incident resulted in a wire cut on Emene Industrial Lines 1 and 2, which impacted a distribution tower and disrupted supply to several 33kV feeders within the Transmission Company of Nigeria switch yard at the New Haven Station,” Ezeh said.

He listed the affected feeders to include Trans Ekulu, Thinkers Corner, Ituku-Ozalla, and Ugwogo 33kV lines, all linked to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) facility.

As a result, several communities including Trans Ekulu, Emene, Thinkers Corner, Emenite, Airport, Alo Aluminium, Akpuoga, Nkwubor, Ugwuomu, Abakpa Nike, Nike Lake, and Ugwogo are currently without electricity.

“Our technical team is working diligently to rectify the fault and restore electricity supply to the affected areas as quickly as possible,” he added.

The company expressed regret over the disruption, apologising to customers for the inconvenience caused by what it described as an unforeseen development.
