The Anambra State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Paul Onwualu in Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed that preliminary findings showed that the officers allegedly involved in the arrest preceding the deceased’s sudden health complication and eventual death were not attached to the Anambra State Police Command.
According to the statement, the Command had already identified the officers involved and assured residents that a thorough investigation was underway to uncover the facts surrounding the incident.
“The Anambra State Police Command wishes to inform the public that it has commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate death of the late Mr. Paul Onwualu in Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State,” Ikenga stated.
“Preliminary information available to the Command reveals that the officers allegedly involved in the arrest before the sudden complication of the deceased’s health, which later led to his death, have been identified, but are not operatives attached to the Anambra State Police Command.”
The Command assured Ndi Anambra and the general public that the matter was being treated with utmost seriousness.
“The Command assures Ndi Anambra and members of the public that the matter is being handled with the seriousness it deserves to ascertain the facts surrounding the unfortunate incident,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Ikioye Orutugu, appealed to residents to remain calm and allow the investigation to run its course.
“The Commissioner of Police urges residents to remain calm and allow the ongoing investigation to run its course, while reaffirming the Command’s commitment to transparency, professionalism, and the protection of lives and property,” Ikenga said on behalf of the CP.
The police spokesperson further assured that updates on the investigation would be communicated to the public as events unfold.
