The Ukwa la Ngwa – Aba Union has officially endorsed Alex Otti as the sole governorship candidate of Ukwa La Ngwa extraction for the 2027 governorship election in Abia State, calling on all aspirants from the zone to step down in support of the governor’s re-election bid.
The resolution formed part of a communique issued at the end of the Union’s general meeting held in Aba on May 9, 2026, under the leadership of Chief Barr. Theo Nkire and presided over by the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Emmanuel Ihuoma Emeruwa.
The gathering attracted prominent sons and daughters of Ukwa La Ngwa, including lawmakers, traditional rulers, women and youth leaders, business figures, academics, diaspora representatives, labour leaders, civil society groups, and political stakeholders.
The Union declared that the theme of the meeting, “Shared Prosperity: Our Role in the Continuous Development of Abia State,” reflected the determination of Ukwa La Ngwa people to remain active partners in the development and political stability of the state.
In the communique jointly signed by Chief Barr. Theo Nkire and Rt. Hon. Emeruwa, the group pledged total support for Governor Otti’s administration and vowed to work for the consolidation and continuity of his government beyond 2027.
“We reaffirmed our pride of place as worthy partners in the progress of our dear State and pledged our commitment towards the stabilization and success of the Alex Otti-led administration,” the communique stated.
“We agreed that through concerted efforts, we shall work for the consolidation and continuity of the government of the day to ensure its electoral victory in 2027 and the ultimate delivery of the dividends of democracy for the benefit of our people afterwards.”
The Union praised the governor’s handling of state resources despite prevailing economic challenges, citing massive road construction, rehabilitation of public infrastructure, establishment of smart schools and modern hospitals, and the construction of the Aba and Umuahia bus terminals among key achievements of the administration.
The group also commended efforts toward the proposed Aba State creation, applauding lawmakers, socio-cultural groups, diaspora communities, and government officials for sustained advocacy during the constitutional amendment process.
On the economy, the Union raised concerns over inflation, unemployment, insecurity, and the rising cost of living, while urging the state government to intensify support for agriculture, SMEs, industrial clusters, and digital infrastructure.
The communique also applauded the Labour Party for granting Governor Otti a free nomination form for the 2027 election, describing the gesture as recognition of his performance and leadership.
“We express our profound gratitude to the National Working Committee and National Executive Council of the Labour Party for granting His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, a free nomination form to contest the 2027 general election,” the Union stated.
“This kind gesture affirms the party’s recognition of the Governor’s sterling performance, his integrity, and avid commitment to the people of Abia State.”
In what appeared to be a major political directive ahead of the next governorship election, the Union appealed to all Ukwa La Ngwa sons and daughters both at home and abroad not to challenge Otti in 2027.
“We hereby appeal to all sons and daughters of Ukwa la Ngwa extraction, both at home and in the diaspora, not to contest the 2027 gubernatorial election against our son and performing Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti,” the communique read.
“We further request that all aspirants from the Ukwa la Ngwa bloc in other political parties should step aside from the race in agreement with our collective decision to present only one Ukwa la Ngwa Governorship candidate for 2027.”
The Union subsequently passed a unanimous vote of confidence on Governor Otti and formally endorsed him as its sole candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
“We hereby endorse and adopt His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, as the sole candidate of Ukwa la Ngwa – Aba Union for the 2027 Abia State gubernatorial election,” the leaders declared.
“We wholeheartedly pledge to mobilize our people across all nine local government areas of Ukwa La Ngwa land to ensure a resounding victory for our son, the Governor of Abia State, and the Labour Party in 2027.”
