AbdulAziz Umar, son of former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has formally declared his intention to contest for the House of Representatives seat representing Dawakin Tofa/Tofa/Rimin Gado Federal Constituency in Kano State under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The move marks a dramatic political shift for the Ganduje family, long associated with the APC, and signals AbdulAziz’s alignment with the growing political structure of former Kano State Governor, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
AbdulAziz’s decision is already generating reactions within Kano’s political landscape, particularly because of the long-standing political rivalry and strained relationship between Kwankwaso and his father, Ganduje.
A trending video circulating on social media captured the younger Ganduje openly discussing his political ambition and his growing relationship with Kwankwaso, effectively confirming his defection into the former governor’s political fold.
The NDC, now adopted by Kwankwaso following his exit from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has continued to gain momentum across Kano State, attracting influential politicians, loyal grassroots supporters, and fresh entrants ahead of the 2027 elections.
Political observers believe AbdulAziz’s entry into the race could reshape the political calculations in the Dawakin Tofa/Tofa/Rimin Gado constituency and trigger a fierce battle against the APC in one of Kano’s most closely watched contests.
Analysts also say the development underscores the growing influence of Kwankwaso’s political movement in Kano, particularly as prominent political figures continue to gravitate toward the NDC ahead of the next general election.
