The Katsina State Government has announced the tragic death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died while being held captive by bandits, despite efforts by authorities and security agencies to secure his freedom.
In a statement issued on Friday, June 13, 2025, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu, described the development as a devastating loss for Katsina State and the nation.
“The Katsina State Government, with a heavy heart and deep sense of loss, wishes to inform the general public of the tragic passing of Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar,” the statement read.
According to the government, the former military officer died in captivity from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits captivity. Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the State Government and various Security Agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy,” Mu’azu stated.
The government noted that the retired General’s abduction and eventual death represent a painful blow not only to his family but also to Katsina State and Nigeria as a whole.
“The deceased Retired General died a natural death from complications of diabetes and hypertension.
“His abduction and subsequent death are not only a loss to his family and Katsina State but a monumental loss to the entire country,” the Commissioner added.
Reacting to the heartbreaking development, Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences to the bereaved family.
The governor described the incident as “a dark moment” and said it underscored the urgent need for stronger collective action against criminal groups terrorising communities across the country.
Governor Radda also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to combating insecurity and ensuring that those behind the crime are held accountable.
“The Katsina State Government remains committed to working with the Federal Government and security forces to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are brought to justice. We assure the citizens of Katsina State that our resolve to eliminate banditry and ensure the safety of all residents remains unshaken,” the statement said.
Offering prayers for the deceased, the government said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family during this difficult time. May the soul of the departed Retired Major General Rabe Abdulakdir rest in eternal peace.”
The death of the retired General in captivity adds to growing concerns over the persistent threat posed by banditry in parts of northern Nigeria and has once again highlighted the human cost of the country’s security challenges.
