The Anambra State Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with separate cases of alleged murder and child abuse that recently sparked outrage across the state and on social media.
The Command, while confirming the arrests on Monday, June 15, 2026, commended residents for their vigilance and timely provision of information, which it said has continued to assist security agencies in uncovering criminal activities and apprehending offenders.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Command said the arrests followed investigations into two disturbing incidents involving the alleged secret burial of a young woman in Nkpor and the abuse of a 10-year-old boy in Isiowulu.
“The Anambra State Police Command commends residents of the State for their vigilance, cooperation and timely provision of information that continues to aid Police and other security agencies in exposing criminal activities and apprehending offenders,” the statement read.
According to the police, one of the suspects, 33-year-old Ifechukwu Okechukwu, is being investigated for the alleged murder and secret burial of his 23-year-old girlfriend.
The case, the Command said, came to light following credible information supplied by concerned members of the public, leading to the suspect’s arrest.
“The first suspect in custody, Ifechukwu Okechukwu ‘M’ aged 33 years is being investigated for the alleged murder and secret burial of his 23-year old girlfriend. The case was reported following credible information received from concerned members of the public, leading to the suspect’s arrest,” Ikenga stated.
He added that operatives attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) have taken over the matter and commenced detailed investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure justice is served.
In a separate case, police arrested three suspects over the alleged abuse of a 10-year-old boy at Odume Layout, Isiowulu.
The suspects were identified as Chukwudi Chukwuyere, 40; Chisom Chukwuyere, 30; and Arum Goodluck, 16.
According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the victim sustained severe injuries inflicted on different parts of his body.
During interrogation, one of the suspects allegedly admitted to participating in the abuse.
“During interrogation, Mrs Chisom confessed to having used burning plastic to inflict burns on the victim,” the statement disclosed.
The police said the child has since been provided with necessary care and support while investigators continue to gather evidence to facilitate prosecution.
Reacting to the incidents, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, reassured residents of the Command’s determination to protect lives and property and ensure that offenders face the full weight of the law.
“The Command remains committed to protecting lives and property, enforcing the law, and ensuring that perpetrators of crimes are brought to justice,” the police commissioner said.
Orutugu also urged residents to sustain their cooperation with security agencies by promptly reporting suspicious activities and criminal conduct through police emergency lines or the nearest police station.
The arrests come amid growing efforts by security agencies in Anambra State to combat crime and strengthen community-based intelligence gathering across the state.
