The Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos has announced plans for a grand celebration in honour of its Emeritus Archbishop, His Eminence Anthony Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie, as he marks his 90th birthday alongside two other major milestones in his remarkable journey of service to the Church and humanity.

The celebration, scheduled for June 16, 2026, will also commemorate Cardinal Okogie’s 60th anniversary as a priest and his 55th anniversary as a bishop, achievements the Archdiocese described as a testament to a lifetime of unwavering faith, leadership and dedication.

In a statement issued on June 5, 2026, by the Chairman of the All-Purpose Committee, Rt. Hon. Chev. Peter Nwanze, the Archdiocese said the three landmark anniversaries have been merged into a single thanksgiving event to honour one of Nigeria’s most respected Catholic leaders.

According to the statement, the celebration will commence with a Solemn Thanksgiving Mass at 10 a.m. at Holy Cross Cathedral, Lagos, and will be attended by bishops, priests, religious leaders, lay faithful, government officials, traditional rulers, captains of industry, friends and well-wishers from across Nigeria and beyond.

A reception is expected to follow immediately at The Hall, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The Archdiocese also disclosed that a major humanitarian outreach programme has been incorporated into the celebration in recognition of Cardinal Okogie’s lifelong commitment to charity and service to the less privileged.

Describing the celebrant as an exceptional churchman and statesman, Nwanze said the event is a fitting tribute to a man whose influence has transcended the Church and impacted the Nigerian nation.

“Cardinal Okogie remains a symbol of courage, integrity and unwavering faith, having spent decades championing justice, defending human dignity and providing exemplary leadership during some of the nation’s most challenging periods,” he stated.

Nwanze further noted that the Emeritus Archbishop has continued to inspire generations through his commitment to truth, justice and selfless service.

“For generations of Catholics and Nigerians alike, Cardinal Okogie has stood as a moral compass and a prophetic voice, inspiring countless people through his pastoral zeal, commitment to truth and steadfast service to the common good,” he added.

Born on June 16, 1936, Cardinal Okogie is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential Catholic clerics, having played a prominent role in shaping the Church and advocating for social justice, good governance and human dignity throughout his decades-long ministry.

The June 16 celebration is expected to draw dignitaries from across the country and beyond as the Catholic community joins family, friends and admirers in celebrating the enduring legacy of the revered church leader.
