The Enugu State Ministry of Health has issued a public health alert over the circulation of counterfeit Augmentin 625mg tablets reportedly in circulation across Nigeria, with possible distribution channels extending into Enugu State.
In a statement released on June 18, 2026 by the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry, Ugodu Chidiogo, for the Honourable Commissioner, the government warned residents of the emerging threat posed by falsified antibiotics currently in circulation.
According to the alert, intelligence reports indicate that the fake products bear the same Batch No. AC3N as the genuine Augmentin 625mg manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), raising concerns about deliberate imitation and potential infiltration into legitimate supply chains.
The Ministry further disclosed that the counterfeit drugs show inconsistencies in manufacturing and expiry dates—listed as September 2025 and 2028 respectively—alongside poor-quality packaging seals and textural errors that suggest compromised safety, quality, and effectiveness.
The statement cautioned that the circulation of such drugs poses a serious public health risk and urged residents to remain vigilant when purchasing medications.
Members of the public were advised to buy medicines only from licensed pharmacies and accredited health facilities, and to carefully inspect all Augmentin 625mg tablets before use.
“Members of the public are advised to purchase medicines only from licensed pharmacies and accredited health facilities. Providers and the general public should carefully inspect all Augmentin 625mg tablets before use,” the Ministry stated.
It further urged prompt reporting of any suspected counterfeit products to the nearest health authority or directly to the Enugu State Ministry of Health.
“Together, let us protect our communities from the dangers of counterfeit medicines,” the statement added.
