The House of Representatives descended into a heated session on Tuesday after lawmakers clashed over a proposal to summon President Bola Tinubu to explain the alleged non-release of funds for constituency projects nationwide.

The drama began when the member representing Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency of Abia State, Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, moved a motion calling on the President to appear before the House over the continued delay in funding constituency projects.

The motion, which was seconded, took a more dramatic turn when another lawmaker proposed an amendment urging the House to suspend plenary for one week until the funding issue was resolved.

The proposal immediately split the chamber.

Leading the opposition to the motion, Hon. Yusuf Gagdi argued that summoning the President was unnecessary, insisting that the responsibility for implementing and funding constituency projects rests with the relevant government agencies rather than the Presidency.

Gagdi also rejected the suggestion that the House should suspend legislative activities for one week, describing the proposal as unjustifiable.

His position sparked a fierce backlash from opposition lawmakers, who openly challenged the counter-amendment, triggering shouting matches and heated exchanges across the chamber.

As tensions escalated and proceedings became increasingly disorderly, Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, intervened in an effort to restore calm.

The Speaker subsequently directed that the matter be subjected to a vote, allowing lawmakers to take a definitive position on the contentious motion.
