The Enugu State Government has sealed four unlicensed private hospitals in Enugu North Local Government Area as it intensified statewide enforcement of healthcare regulations aimed at sanitising the private health sector and protecting residents from unsafe medical practices.
The enforcement exercise, conducted by the Enugu State Ministry of Health, forms part of a renewed monitoring and supervision initiative ordered by the Commissioner for Health, Prof. George Ugwu, to ensure compliance with licensing and operational standards among private healthcare providers.
The inspection team, led by the Director of Medical Services, Dr. Chinyere Ezeudu, alongside senior directors of the ministry, carried out an unscheduled visit to private health facilities across Enugu North Local Government Area.
During the exercise, seven private health facilities were inspected to assess their operational status, licensing documentation, registration and compliance with established healthcare regulations. At the end of the inspection, four facilities were sealed for failing to meet the statutory requirements for operation.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. George Ugwu, reaffirmed the commitment of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s administration to ensuring that residents have access to safe, quality and professionally regulated healthcare services.
He stressed that the monitoring and enforcement exercise would continue across the state to ensure that only duly licensed and compliant healthcare facilities are allowed to operate.
According to him, the ongoing supervision is part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen the state’s healthcare system and eliminate illegal medical practices that could endanger public health.
The ministry also called on operators of private health facilities across Enugu State to regularise their operations by renewing expired licences and registering any facility yet to be captured by the appropriate regulatory authorities.
It noted that the exercise is not intended as a punitive measure alone but as a strategic intervention to improve standards, enforce compliance and safeguard the lives of residents through quality healthcare delivery.
