Human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has explained the circumstances surrounding the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)’s invitation of two prominent supporters of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, dismissing speculations about their safety and revealing that the anti-graft agency questioned them over allegations of naira abuse.
In a statement issued on July 16, 2026, Effiong confirmed that his clients, Mr. Peter Akah, popularly known as Peter4Nigeria, and Miss Precious Oruche, widely known as Mama Pee, honoured the EFCC’s invitation after their legal team secured a rescheduling of the initial appointment.
According to the lawyer, both activists were originally invited to appear before the Commission on July 6, 2026, following separate invitation letters dated June 24, 2026, over allegations bordering on abuse of the naira.
“There is growing agitation in the public space on the whereabouts and safety of our clients and good governance activists, Mr. Peter Akah and Miss Precious Oruche, popularly known as Peter4Nigeria and @MamaPee__ respectively,” Effiong said.
He disclosed that the legal team requested a new date because the activists were unavailable on the day originally fixed by the Commission.
“We wrote to the Commission to reschedule the meeting to Wednesday, 15th July, 2026 since our clients were not available on the originally scheduled date,” he stated.
Effiong said the duo appeared before EFCC investigators on Wednesday, July 15, where they cooperated fully with the investigation before being released.
“We arrived the Commission with Peter for Nigeria and Mama Pee on Wednesday and met with the investigators.
“After cooperating with the Commission, our clients were released and we departed the EFCC’s Headquarters. We will be going today in furtherance of the investigation,” he added.
The lawyer commended the conduct of the anti-graft agency during the interrogation, describing the officers as professional throughout the exercise.
“During the interrogation on Wednesday, which took considerable time, the Commission acted professionally,” he said.
Effiong further revealed that the activists denied abusing the Nigerian currency, explaining that the items referenced by investigators were merely props used for entertainment purposes.
“Our clients clarified that what was referenced were Props money for entertainment and not Naira notes,” he stated.
He also reassured Nigerians that the two activists were safe and in good spirits, appreciating the public concern generated by reports surrounding the EFCC invitation.
“Our clients are in high spirits and they appreciate the concerns expressed by spirited Nigerians regarding their safety.
“We will provide more information about this matter in due course,” Effiong added.
