More than 30 people, including women and children, have reportedly been killed after suspected terrorists launched a deadly attack on Kamaru village in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State, prompting the Southern Kaduna Peoples’ Union (SOKAPU) to demand urgent security intervention.
The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, has heightened fears over the worsening security situation across rural communities in Southern Kaduna.
In an open letter dated July 27, and addressed to the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, SOKAPU President, Tabara Kato, lamented the escalating wave of killings despite repeated assurances from security agencies and ongoing engagements with stakeholders.
According to Kato, residents of Kajuru, Chikun, Kauru and Zangon Kataf local government areas continue to live under constant threat as armed groups intensify attacks, forcing many families to flee their ancestral homes.
He urged the police to take immediate and decisive action to halt the growing incidents of killings, kidnappings and destruction of farmlands.
The union also called for a shift from reactive policing to proactive, intelligence-led security operations capable of dismantling criminal networks before they strike.
SOKAPU further demanded the deployment of mobile police and specialised counter-terrorism units to vulnerable rural communities and forests to sustain operations against armed groups.
The group also urged security agencies to improve response times to distress calls and strengthen strategic communication with residents to restore public confidence.
According to the union, safeguarding lives and property remains the primary responsibility of government.
Copies of the letter were also forwarded to Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, with the union urging all security stakeholders to treat the appeal with utmost urgency to prevent further bloodshed and displacement.
Kaduna Govt Condemns Attack
Reacting to the incident, the Kaduna State Government condemned the attack, describing the killings and destruction as tragic and unacceptable.
In a statement, the state’s Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Ahmed Maiyaki, said Governor Uba Sani had directed security agencies to intensify operations to track down and arrest those behind the attack.
“The Kaduna State Government has received with deep sorrow reports of the killing of persons following an attack on Naridon Village,” the statement read.
“The Government strongly condemns the attack and has directed security agencies to intensify operations to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.”
The government said Governor Sani had also extended his condolences to the bereaved families while praying for the repose of those killed and the speedy recovery of victims who sustained injuries during the attack.
To support the affected community, the governor directed the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA) to immediately deploy relief materials and humanitarian assistance to victims’ families.
The government further reaffirmed its commitment to working with neighbouring Plateau State, security agencies, traditional rulers and community leaders to strengthen security collaboration along the border communities and curb recurring attacks.
Appealing for calm, Maiyaki urged residents to avoid reprisals and continue supporting security agencies with credible intelligence.
“The Government urges residents to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding, support security agencies with credible information, reject violence, and embrace dialogue. The Kaduna State Government remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding every community and sustaining peace, security, and social harmony across the State,” he stated.
