A 47-year-old man is believed to have shot his wife and their six children to death before setting the family home on fire and taking his own life in what authorities have described as an “unspeakable tragedy” in Grand Haven Township, Michigan, United States.
The victims were identified as Kristopher Karolkiewicz, his 39-year-old wife, Amanda, and their six children, who were between the ages of five and 15.
According to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department, firefighters responded to reports of smoke rising from the family’s home on July 24. After extinguishing the blaze, emergency responders discovered the bodies of all eight family members inside the residence.
Autopsy results later confirmed that each of the victims died from gunshot wounds.
Investigators said preliminary findings indicate that Kristopher Karolkiewicz allegedly shot his wife and six children before turning the gun on himself.
Authorities also believe the fire was deliberately ignited in several parts of the house after the shootings in what appears to have been an attempt to destroy evidence. However, investigators said the exact cause and origin of the blaze are still being examined.
Officials disclosed that deputies had earlier responded to reports of a smoky smell in the neighbourhood that morning but found no immediate signs of danger. Hours later, fresh emergency calls prompted another visit to the property, where thick smoke was seen billowing from the home.
Inside the charred residence, deputies found the victims, with some of the children discovered in their bedrooms.
Investigators have yet to establish a motive for the killings, saying inquiries are ongoing to determine the circumstances that led to the deadly incident.
Describing the case as an “unspeakable tragedy,” authorities said they are continuing forensic examinations and interviews as they work to piece together what happened inside the family home.
