The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on President Bola Tinubu to direct his administration’s efforts toward defeating terrorists and addressing Nigeria’s worsening security challenges, rather than focusing on weakening opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Following President Tinubu’s Tuesday meeting with members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, where he expressed optimism about improvements in the country’s security situation and economic outlook, the party issued its remarks.
However, the President’s comments drew criticism from opposition parties, which questioned the administration’s assessment of the nation’s realities.
According to the ADC, the government’s claim that security has improved does not reflect the experiences of many Nigerians who continue to grapple with violent attacks, kidnappings and other criminal activities across several parts of the country.
The party argued that restoring safety and addressing citizens’ welfare should remain the administration’s primary focus.
The opposition party also accused the government of paying excessive attention to political calculations ahead of the 2027 elections instead of confronting the pressing issues affecting millions of Nigerians.
It maintained that efforts to strengthen democracy should not come at the expense of addressing insecurity and economic hardship.
The development adds to the growing political exchanges between the ruling administration and opposition parties as debates intensify over the country’s security situation, economic performance and preparations for the next general election.
