The Federal Government has announced plans to establish the Co-operatives Bank of Nigeria as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen and professionalise the country’s co-operative sector to promote food security, community wealth creation and inclusive economic growth.

The Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Aliyu Abdullahi, disclosed this during the grand finale of the United Nations International Day of Co-operatives, Ministerial Advocacy Tour and South-South Zonal Engagement held in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.

He said the initiative forms part of broader reforms aimed at repositioning co-operative societies as key drivers of grassroots economic development.

Dr. Abdullahi noted that the proposed bank will improve access to finance for co-operative societies, enabling them to expand their activities and contribute more effectively to national development.

He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to implementing policies that will strengthen the co-operative movement and enhance its role in achieving sustainable economic growth and improved food security across the country.
