X has announced the end of its existing creator revenue-sharing programme as the Elon Musk-owned platform moves to a new payment system designed to reward original content.
The platform stopped accepting new applications for the current revenue-sharing programme on August 7. Creators who remain eligible will receive their final payments in September, covering qualifying earnings up to September 7.
X said the change was prompted by concerns that the outgoing system could encourage creators to recycle popular material rather than produce original work.
Under the new Original Content Rewards programme, creators’ earnings will be determined by qualified impressions generated by their original posts. Payments will be made every two weeks, provided creators and their content continue to meet X’s eligibility requirements.
The platform said qualifying content could include videos, threads, photographs, memes, original reporting, commentary, analysis, graphics and illustrations.
Content that substantially transforms existing material through creative editing, humour, narration or analysis may also qualify for rewards under the new system.
Allegra Jacchia, X’s head of creators, said the revamped programme was designed to better reward users who contribute creativity, expertise and original ideas to conversations on the platform.
However, the new programme will initially be restricted to creators already enrolled in the outgoing revenue-sharing scheme.
The shift marks a significant change in X’s approach to creator monetisation, placing greater emphasis on originality and the value creators bring through their own work.
