Enugu State is positioning itself as a hub for local technology manufacturing, with the Enugu Haier Factory expected to produce up to 200,000 units annually across a range of consumer, industrial and medical technologies.
The development followed a visit to the facility by the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr Aminu Maida, who inspected the factory and its planned manufacturing capacity.
The facility is expected to manufacture smartphones, tablets, computers, smart boards, television sets, medical technologies and renewable-energy solutions, marking a significant shift towards local production and value creation within Enugu’s emerging digital economy.
The visit also highlighted the potential for the factory to benefit from regulatory support as the NCC committed to facilitating the necessary approvals and licensing required for its recognition as a local IT product manufacturer.
Such recognition would position the facility to access applicable government incentives and potentially expand its products into export markets, strengthening Enugu’s role in Nigeria’s technology and manufacturing ecosystem.
The development is part of the broader economic transformation agenda of the administration of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, which has increasingly placed technology, skills development, industrialisation and private-sector investment at the centre of the state’s economic strategy.
With an annual production capacity of 200,000 units, the factory is expected to create employment opportunities, build technical capacity and deepen local participation in the technology value chain.
The investment also has the potential to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported technology products by increasing the proportion of devices and technological solutions manufactured locally.
The NCC’s proposed regulatory support is particularly significant as it could enable the factory to move beyond assembly and commercial distribution towards formal recognition as a local technology manufacturer, opening access to incentives and wider markets.
The development reflects the state’s emerging ambition to transition from primarily consuming imported technology to producing technology for Nigerian and international markets.
Under Mbah’s administration, the push for a technology-driven economy has also been linked to efforts to expand digital skills, attract investment and create opportunities for young people to participate in emerging industries.
The Enugu Haier Factory therefore represents more than an individual manufacturing investment, but part of a broader attempt to establish an ecosystem in which technology production, employment, skills acquisition and exports can reinforce one another.
The administration’s message is that Enugu is moving from buying technology to making technology, with the ultimate objective of turning the state’s growing digital economy into a platform for industrial and economic development.
